Acid House

The 303, and everything Chicago did with it.

Acid is a single piece of equipment that got out of hand: the Roland TB-303, a bass machine nobody wanted, turned sideways into a lead instrument by Chicago producers in the mid-eighties. Filter and resonance became the melody.

In a deep house context it is rarely the whole record — it is a texture laid under warm chords, which is why the same names recur here as elsewhere in the genre. Larry Heard made some of the most restrained acid records ever pressed, and also some of the deepest.
