Garage House
Deep house with a voice, out of New York.
Garage house is the strain that kept the singer. Where Chicago went stripped and hypnotic, New York kept gospel phrasing, live keys and a vocal worth learning the words to — the lineage runs from the Paradise Garage through Strictly Rhythm, Nervous and Masters At Work.
It is also the most quietly influential corner of the genre. Hardrive's Deep Inside is a loop of a Barbara Tucker vocal and almost nothing else, and thirty years on it is still in record bags. If you like deep house but find a lot of it cold, this is the shelf to start at.
